PCOS Diet PDF Print E-mail

If you have symptoms of PCOS, you can relieve some of your symptoms, and possibly reverse the effects of your disease, with a healthy PCOS diet.

It's no secret that there is a connection between PCOS and choice of diet. With the growing awareness of the obesity crisis in the western world there has been an influx of diet plans that promise dramatic results.

Often times, usually after losing weight most people go back to their old ways of eating after some time, and put all if not more weight back on. This is particularly true of women with PCOS. Because dieting and weight loss is so difficult, it is not uncommon for women to try many different diet plans leaving them to wonder, what is the best PCOS diet?

What is the best PCOS diet?

The typical low fat and high carbohydrate weight loss diet may not help women with PCOS. A woman with PCOS consuming too many carbohydrates, especially ones with a high glycemic index such as those found in white bread, white rice and sweets will increase the levels of insulin.

There is also the question about whether a low carbohydrate diet is appropriate due to the link with insulin resistance. One of the pitfalls of many of the low-carbohydrate diets is that they are high in saturated fats. In addition to potentially leading to heart disease, such a diet is low in fibre, vitamins, minerals and other essentials.

Low-fat diets are often unsuccessful as well. People who follow this type of diet frequently eat a lot of foods high in carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates like rice, potato, pasta and white sugar can cause insulin levels to rise which can eventually lead to insulin resistance. This can start an ongoing cycle of PCOS symptoms, androgen levels, insulin resistance and weight gain.

You can avoid certain foods to help relieve some of your symptoms and potentially reverse the effects of PCOS. Because insulin resistance has been strongly linked to PCOS, it is recommended that PCOS sufferers avoid foods that increase the body’s insulin resistance.

Avoid Foods with High Glycemic Indexes

For PCOS patients to lose weight, they should avoid foods with high glycemic indexes such as sweets and soft drinks containing large amounts of refined sugar, processed rice, bread, and processed pasta. These foods should be replaced in moderation with carbohydrates containing lower glycemic indexes like whole grain bread, pasta and rice. Drinks such as herbal tea, with a small amount of honey, are healthier for PCOS patients to drink.
