What are ovarian cysts? PDF Print E-mail

An ovarian cyst is a fluid filled sac which grows in or on the ovary. Many ovarian cysts are noncancerous and occur as a result of ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary).

Most ovarian cysts are harmless (non-cancerous) and cause no symptoms. Some cysts are malignant and can cause problems such as pain and irregular bleeding.

No treatment is needed for certain types of ovarian cysts which tend to go away on their own.

Ovarian cysts are variable in size - from smaller than the size of a pea to the size of a tennis ball (sometimes even larger).

However, ovarian cysts (particularly ruptured ovarian cysts) are sometimes capable of producing serious symptoms.

In order to protect your health, it's vital that you know the symptoms and types of ovarian cysts that may signal a more serious problem, and to schedule regular pelvic examinations.
